It delivers consistent networking and security across multiple hypervisors and workloads (VMs, containers and bare metal servers). It aims at building agile, secure and flexible private clouds, which can be interconnected and extended to public clouds (either built on VMware NSX-T is designed to address application frameworks and architectures that have heterogeneous endpoints and technology stacks. In addition to vSphere, these environments may include other hypervisors, containers, bare metal operating systems, and public clouds. NSX-T was designed from the ground up as a network virtualization platform independent of vSphere. The goal was not to avoid vSphere of course, but rather to give NSX-T a larger span so that it can provide services beyond it.
It is an NSX-T technology. Compared to NSX-V that makes use of the vSphere Distributed Switch, the N-VDS is decoupled from VMware vCenter and is a host switch created on the transport nodes such as ESXi. VMware NSX-T is VMware’s solution to modernize networking and security in the enterprise and cloud-native environments and everything in between.
